When you look at the photo above, you see two accomplished black belts: Ms. Livvy O’Neill (2nd Dan) and Eric Wu (3rd Dan). But their stories didn’t begin there — they began in grade school, under the bright lights and guiding hands of their martial arts family right here at Omaha Blue Waves.
The Roots: Planting the Seed
Livvy and Eric both walked through our doors as children. They were small, curious, and full of energy — perhaps a little unsure at first — but eager to learn. Over time, they stretched, kicked, stumbled, and got back up again. What started as classes after school or weekend sessions transformed into a passion.
Their early years in TaeKwon‑Do were full of belt tests, forms, sparring drills, and countless hours of repetition. But woven through every technique was something more: character, discipline, confidence, and community.
From Local to National — Earning Their Way
As the years passed, both Livvy and Eric advanced through the ranks. Their commitment deepened. They embraced challenges—testing under pressure, teaching younger students, competing, and pushing themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Eventually, the hard work paid off in more ways than one. Today:
Livvy is studying in Missouri, continuing her academic and martial arts path.
Eric is in California, doing the same.
Each is attending a university out of state—on scholarship—but their journey to get there was paved in part by the lessons learned on the mats here in Omaha.
Homecomings: Returning to the Mats
Even though they live far away now, their hearts haven’t drifted. During holidays and breaks, they come home. Not just to see family—though that’s always on their list—they come back to train, to support, to reconnect with their martial arts roots.
When Livvy steps back into our dojang, or Eric joins on a Saturday morning class, something subtle shifts. Their presence inspires. Younger students see where consistent effort can lead. Instructors see the long-term fruit of dedication. And the community feels, in a tangible way, that martial arts is more than a sport—it’s a lifelong bond.
What Their Stories Teach Us
Their journeys offer several lessons worth remembering:
Beginnings matter – What starts in grade school, with patience and good instruction, can evolve into greatness.
Consistency builds character – Advancement isn’t just about belts, but about showing up year after year.
Your community becomes your family – Even miles away, they return to the family that shaped them.
It’s lifelong – Martial arts doesn’t end at black belt—or at college. It continues, grows, and roots deeper over time.
So when you next visit our classes, or see Livvy or Eric in a photo, remember: you’re not just witnessing a belt. You’re seeing a story of growth, perseverance, and connection.
