My parents had no idea what to look for, just that these guys were in the area doing martial arts and that martial arts are supposed to be good for building confidence, self-esteem, fitness... all that. And it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Save yourself the trouble of shopping around. We have taught martial arts to students for many years. We feel that the best time to start martial arts is when you are ready. We did set our start age at 5 because children younger than this have difficulty focusing and dealing with separation anxiety. Waiting till 5 gives most children the best chance of having a positive first experience.
Many of the parents of young children decide to take classes with them several nights a week. This is a great opportunity for bonding and to learn something new.

The Legacy of TaeKwon-Do
TaeKwon-Do, a Korean martial art, began to take shape in Seoul after WWII, blending traditional Korean techniques with Chinese and Japanese influences. In 1957, General Choi Hong Hi, the father of TaeKwon-Do, officially named it “TaeKwon-Do,” meaning “the way of the foot and fist.” The art was formalized under the Korean TaeKwon-Do Association, later evolving into the International TaeKwon-Do Federation (ITF) in 1966. A split in 1973 led to the formation of the World Taekwondo Federation (WT).
What distinguishes TaeKwon-Do is its strong ethical code, including tenets and a student oath, emphasizing respect, discipline, and integrity. Today, it is the most widely practiced martial art worldwide.
