Jeffrey W. Helaney has spent more than five decades cultivating a life rooted in discipline, community service, and leadership—both on and off the martial arts mat. From his early years in Omaha, Nebraska, to his national influence as a grandmaster and organizational leader, Helaney has dedicated himself to preserving the integrity of martial arts while using it as a vehicle for personal growth and public good.
Helaney’s martial arts journey began in 1969. Born into a family that valued both physical discipline and civic responsibility, he was first introduced to martial arts by his father, Wallace G. Helaney. He began formal training at the Omaha Karate & Judo School under the guidance of Grandmaster S.K. Shin. In the following years, Helaney immersed himself in traditional Korean martial arts such as Judo, TaeKwon‑Do, and Sports Karate, learning from highly regarded instructors including Fred VanAckeren and Steve Johnson. These early foundations laid the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to the martial arts.
Over the years, Helaney earned black belts across a range of disciplines. His most prominent rank is a 9th Dan in Traditional Chang Hon-style TaeKwon‑Do, a title he received in 2014. He also holds an 8th Dan in Tae Sool Hapkido, demonstrating his deep expertise in both striking and grappling systems. In addition to his Korean martial arts mastery, Helaney has trained in Sports Karate and Pent-Jak Silat, showcasing a breadth of technical knowledge that spans continents and philosophies.
Beyond the dojang, Helaney’s professional life has been marked by equally significant service. In 1984, he began a law enforcement career that would span over two decades. Over the course of that long and dedicated career, Helaney served in multiple law enforcement agencies, where he held a wide range of roles. His positions included Training Officer, Field Supervisor, Detective Bureau Commander, and ultimately Assistant Chief of Police. His broad experience across different agencies provided him with a comprehensive understanding of public safety, investigations, and community policing.
During this period of public service, Helaney sought to combine his passion for martial arts with his commitment to youth development and drug prevention. In 1996, he founded Kick Drugs Out of Alliance (KDOA)—a groundbreaking community program that used martial arts as a tool to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse. KDOA emphasized discipline, respect, and accountability, offering youth a positive and structured alternative to negative influences. The program received widespread recognition, including accolades from the Ohio House of Representatives, the Ohio Department of Education, and even a commendation from a former President of the United States. KDOA became a model for how martial arts could be used not just for self-defense, but as a proactive force for community improvement.
After retiring from law enforcement in 2005, Helaney continued his focus on public well-being by transitioning into a broader public health role. He became a Regional Director for Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD) prevention programs, overseeing multiple initiatives aimed at reducing youth substance abuse and promoting healthy decision-making across several communities. His dual background in martial arts and law enforcement uniquely positioned him to lead these efforts, blending structured intervention strategies with practical experience and public engagement.
As an organizational leader, Helaney has had a significant impact on the martial arts community. In 2012, he founded the United States Kido Federation (USKF), a national organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of traditional Korean martial arts, including TaeKwon‑Do, Hapkido, and related disciplines. As the president of USKF, Helaney has worked to create an inclusive and non-political environment where martial artists can seek education, certification, and community without sacrificing their individual philosophies or school autonomy. His leadership reflects a commitment to collaboration, integrity, and the long-term sustainability of martial arts traditions.
In addition to USKF, Helaney also co-founded Omaha Blue Waves Martial Arts, which serves as both his instructional base and a platform for outreach. He has served on advisory boards for several international martial arts organizations, including the International Jun Tong TaeKwon‑Do Federation, the International TaeKwon‑Do Federation HQ (USA), and the World Tae Sool Association. Through these affiliations, Helaney continues to influence curriculum development, instructor training, and the international standards for martial arts excellence.
Throughout his career, Helaney has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. He was named Grandmaster of the Year by Budo Magazine in 2003 and has been inducted into several martial arts Halls of Fame. His accolades include honors such as the “General Choi, Hong Hi Award” for Outstanding Grandmaster and listings in Who’s Who in Martial Arts as both a Pioneer and a Legend. These recognitions reflect not only his technical mastery but also his contributions to martial arts education, philosophy, and community engagement.
Helaney’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that martial arts is not just about physical technique but about developing the whole person. He emphasizes core values like respect, humility, perseverance, and service—principles that have guided both his teaching and his broader civic work. His legacy is defined not only by the students he has trained or the ranks he has achieved, but by the lives he has impacted through mentorship, leadership, and unwavering dedication to public service.
From humble beginnings in a small Omaha dojo to national leadership in martial arts and public health, Jeffrey Helaney exemplifies the martial spirit in every aspect of life. He remains a tireless advocate for the power of martial arts to inspire, transform, and uplift individuals and communities alike.
